Formula and boundaries

Notional in account currency = quantity × price × conversion rate. Simple margin = notional ÷ leverage.

  • This is a single-rate linear model. It does not reproduce exchange futures margin, portfolio offsets, broker tiers or changing margin rules.
  • Quantity is the number of base units, not a platform lot count. Convert contract size separately when necessary.
  • Required broker margin and account liquidation rules must be checked independently.

What the calculator actually estimates

The first step converts a position into account-currency notional: base units × quote price per base unit × account currency per quote unit. The second divides that notional by the chosen leverage number. A divisor of 20 corresponds to a simple margin rate of 5%. The result contains notional, modeled margin and the equivalent percentage so the dimensions can be checked.

Actual requirements depend on product and account rules. OANDA describes margin and leverage, while MetaTrader documents different instrument calculation modes. This page intentionally limits its formula to a single-rate linear scenario.

Follow the conversion through an example

Assume 30,000 base units at a quote price of 1.20, with a conversion of 0.80 account-currency units per quote-currency unit. The quote-currency notional is 36,000. After conversion, the account-currency notional is 28,800. Dividing by a hypothetical 30:1 leverage assumption gives modeled margin of 960.

With the same notional and a 20:1 divisor, the result becomes 1,440. The market exposure has not changed: only the collateral assumption changed. Neither result is a live offer or a statement that a particular jurisdiction, broker or instrument allows that leverage.

Resolve the common unit mistakes

The quantity field expects underlying units. If a platform displays 0.30 lots, convert the lot amount using that symbol's contract size before entering it. A numerical lot label alone is insufficient. Likewise, enter the quoted price in quote currency per base unit and supply the conversion in account currency per quote unit. Taking the reciprocal of the wrong rate can make the arithmetic look plausible while answering the wrong question.

When quote and account currencies match, use a conversion of 1. The displayed equivalent margin rate is 100 divided by leverage, expressed as a percentage. It is not a margin-level percentage computed from equity divided by used margin; those are separate measurements.

When to stop using the simple model

Tiered requirements, hedged positions, portfolio offsets, concentration add-ons, guaranteed-stop charges, exchange futures performance bonds and option risk models need different calculations. The calculator does not account for your existing open positions, pending orders, available funds, credit or broker liquidation thresholds. A result therefore cannot prove order acceptance or predict a margin call.

All inputs must be positive and finite. A zero conversion or leverage divisor is rejected because it cannot represent the stated model. Before reconciling against a broker screen, record its margin currency, rate tier, valuation timestamp and instrument calculation mode. If the result differs, identify the missing rule rather than altering the inputs until the numbers match. This exercise is an explanation of a model, not a basis for increasing exposure.

Questions and answers

Is the displayed margin the maximum I can lose?

No. Margin is a collateral calculation. Market losses, gaps, fees and account rules can produce a different and potentially larger amount.

Can I use this for futures exchange margin?

Not as a reliable requirement calculator. Exchange futures margin and broker add-ons are set under product-specific risk rules and need current source data.
