Pip Value Calculator: Units and Account Currency

A pip value is the monetary change associated with one specified pip for a stated position size. This calculator uses base-currency units and your conversion rate; it does not fetch market quotes.

Key points

  • Enter base units, not a lot label whose contract size is unknown.
  • The conversion rate must mean account currency per one quote-currency unit.
  • A pip, a displayed decimal point and the minimum tick may be different.

Pip value calculator

The starting numbers are illustrative inputs. Replace them with a consistent scenario. Calculations run in your browser; no account connection or live market data is used.

For many non-JPY pairs this is 0.0001; verify your instrument.

Example: 1 when quote and account currencies are identical.

Formula and boundaries

Pip value in account currency = base units × pip size × quote-to-account conversion rate.

  • This is a linear spot-FX calculation, not a universal CFD or futures formula.
  • Enter account-currency units per one unit of quote currency. The rate is supplied by you; no live exchange rate is fetched.
  • Pip size and contract conventions must match the exact instrument. A fractional pip is not necessarily a full pip.

Choose the units before entering a number

Write the pair as base/quote. A price tells you how many quote-currency units exchange for one base unit. For a linear spot-FX position, multiplying base units by a price change gives an amount in quote currency. The tool first applies that relationship to one pip and then converts the result into your account currency.

A common non-JPY pip size is 0.0001, while many JPY pairs use 0.01. These are conventions, not a substitute for checking an instrument. OANDA explains pips and fractional pips. A fifth decimal on a screen does not automatically make the full pip ten times smaller.

Work through an original example

Assume a hypothetical EUR/USD position of 25,000 EUR, a pip size of 0.0001 USD per EUR, and an account denominated in GBP. Suppose the supplied conversion is 0.80 GBP per USD. The quote-currency pip value is 25,000 × 0.0001 = 2.50 USD. Converting gives 2.50 × 0.80 = 2.00 GBP per pip.

These are illustrative inputs, not current exchange rates. A ten-pip movement corresponds to 20 GBP under that fixed conversion assumption, before commissions, financing, spread effects or other charges. Direction determines whether the movement helps or hurts the position; this tool reports the magnitude of one pip.

How to reconcile the result

If your platform accepts lots, first obtain its units per lot. For an illustrative contract containing 100,000 base units per lot, 0.25 lots means 25,000 units. That conversion must be repeated for another symbol rather than copied from a familiar forex pair. MetaQuotes exposes separate contract-size, price-step and currency properties because those dimensions are not interchangeable.

If quote and account currency are identical, the conversion is 1. If the rate is supplied in the opposite direction, take its reciprocal before entry. For example, 1.25 USD per GBP corresponds to 0.80 GBP per USD. Multiplying by 1.25 in the example would answer a different, dimensionally incorrect question.

Know where this model stops

The inputs must be positive finite numbers. A zero quantity has no useful per-position pip interpretation here, and a zero conversion rate is invalid. Very large combinations that exceed numeric range are rejected. Results are rounded for display, so compare reasonable precision rather than demanding identical final decimal digits.

The model does not cover every inverse contract, option or broker-specific CFD calculation. It also does not keep the conversion fixed in the real world. Save the instrument specification, rate direction and rate timestamp alongside any worksheet so a later reviewer can reproduce the calculation. Use the separate position-size tool only after establishing a compatible pip value per lot.

Questions and answers

Does this pip calculator use live exchange rates?

No. You supply the conversion rate and are responsible for its direction, timestamp and suitability for the scenario.

Why does my broker show a different pip value?

Check position units, contract size, pip size, account currency and conversion basis. A broker may also update conversion rates or apply a different instrument calculation mode.
