Base and Quote Currency: Read an FX Price with Units

Turn the pair label into a unit statement

For a pair written EUR/USD at a hypothetical 1.1000, one EUR is quoted at 1.1000 USD. The first currency is the base and the second is the quote. Writing “USD per EUR” alongside the number makes multiplication and conversion checks easier than memorizing a symbol order alone.

CME explains FX quotation conventions. Contract markets can use conventions different from a familiar spot display, so inspect the actual specification before transferring a calculation between instruments.

Calculate quantity and a price movement

Assume 15,000 EUR of linear EUR/USD exposure at 1.1000 USD per EUR. Quote-currency notional is 15,000 × 1.1000 = 16,500 USD. If the price rises to 1.1020 while the same exposure remains, the difference is 0.0020 USD per EUR. Multiplying by 15,000 gives 30 USD gross favorable movement for a long exposure.

For a short exposure the same price increase is adverse. The gross amount is still 30 USD, with the sign reversed. This example omits fees, financing and execution effects and is not a live quote or a statement that a particular account can hold the position.

Keep pips and monetary units distinct

If the specified pip is 0.0001, the 0.0020 movement contains 20 pips. At 15,000 base units, one pip is worth 1.50 USD. A pip is a price-distance convention; the monetary value depends on position units and any account-currency conversion.

If the account reports in GBP, the 30 USD outcome still needs a USD-to-GBP conversion under the relevant booking rule. The fact that neither EUR nor USD is the account currency does not change which currency is base or quote in EUR/USD.

Reverse the quotation carefully

The reciprocal of 1.1000 USD per EUR is approximately 0.909091 EUR per USD. That reverses the units and the base/quote presentation. A percentage increase in one quotation does not become an equal-magnitude percentage decrease in its reciprocal because the denominator changes.

For executable two-sided quotes, inversion also swaps bid and ask: the reciprocal bid comes from the original ask, and the reciprocal ask from the original bid. A single midpoint reciprocal is only an indicative conversion and does not describe a spread-aware execution.

Use the distinction in account comparisons

Record pair order, quantity unit, contract size, quote basis and account currency in a worksheet. A platform lot amount must be converted to the correct base units before applying the simple linear formula. Commodity CFDs, inverse contracts and currency futures may require different multipliers or payoff rules. When comparing source and follower accounts, matching a familiar pair name is the start of the check, not proof that contract exposure and reporting amounts are identical.
