Spot and Forward FX: Compare Dates, Carry and Quote Direction

A spot quotation and a forward quotation refer to different settlement arrangements. Their difference can reflect financing and market conventions, so it should not automatically be interpreted as a forecast or execution error.

Key points

  • Compare exact value dates and quotation directions.
  • A forward premium is not a promise that spot will move to that price.
  • Rolling retail products and exchange futures require their own specifications.

Identify the settlement arrangement

Spot FX refers to a currency exchange under the pair's applicable spot settlement convention. A forward fixes an exchange rate for a later specified value date. Exact business-day, holiday and pair conventions matter, so “spot” should not be simplified to immediate physical settlement for every currency pair.

CME explains quote-convention and carry differences between spot and futures prices. A retail rolling product, an over-the-counter forward and an exchange future can have different funding, settlement and contract rules even when they reference the same currencies.

Derive a simplified carry example

For a quote S expressed as quote currency per base unit, a simplified covered-interest-parity relationship is F = S × (1 + rQuote × T) ÷ (1 + rBase × T). This version assumes simple interest, a shared year fraction T, known compatible rates, no transaction costs and the ability to carry out the required borrowing, lending and exchange.

Assume an illustrative spot rate of 1.10 USD per EUR, a half-year term, a 5% USD rate and a 3% EUR rate. The model gives 1.10 × 1.025 ÷ 1.015, approximately 1.11083744 USD per EUR. The difference from spot is about 0.01083744 USD per EUR. These are deliberately hypothetical inputs, not current market quotes or executable financing rates.

Understand what the forward difference means

The model compares the carrying cost of the two currencies under its assumptions. It does not state that the future spot rate will equal the forward rate. Real forward pricing may include bid-ask spreads, different borrowing and lending terms, collateral arrangements and cross-currency basis effects.

Forward points must also be interpreted using the market's scale and sign convention. Adding an unlabeled number to spot can create an order-of-magnitude error. Preserve the outright forward rate, value date, point scale and quote direction together.

Do not equate forwards and futures mechanically

Exchange futures have standardized contracts and their own margin and settlement processes. Daily cash settlement and other contract details can matter when comparing them with an over-the-counter forward. In addition, a futures quote may use the reciprocal direction of a familiar spot quote. Resolve those differences before examining the remaining price gap.

For a trading journal, record whether P&L includes financing, rollover or separate cash settlements. A price-only comparison can omit an important part of the economic result. For source and follower accounts, a similar symbol name is insufficient evidence of identical contract exposure or holding costs.

This reference explains why unlike settlement arrangements need careful comparison. It does not quote a current forward curve, determine a broker's rollover charge or establish support for a particular forward or futures connection in TradeCopier.

Questions and answers

Is a forward rate a prediction of the future spot rate?

No. It is a price for a specified future settlement arrangement and reflects carry and market conditions. Future spot can differ.

Can I compare spot and futures prices directly?

First align quote direction, contract units, value dates and financing or settlement conventions. A remaining difference is not automatically an execution problem.
